About This Project
The Shops at Pine Grove is a new retail facility in Madison County, Alabama, which includes a Publix supermarket as its main anchor store. Reed’s responsibilities on this project included a complicated grading process, due to the site’s inconsistent, unusually soft soil. We performed an 11,000 CY undercut on the building pads, then imported 23,000 tons of stone to raise up and solidify the pads. Similarly, we had to undercut the parking lot by 7,000 CY, before bringing in 14,400 tons of stone to get the parking lot up out of the mud. In total, we performed 64,000 CY of export on this project, and we also installed multiple utilities.
The main challenge on this job was the swampy conditions of the land. Not only did we have to import rock material to build up the building pads and parking lot, but there was also an Army Corps of Engineers blue-line stream crossing the site. We had to reroute the stream behind the building itself, which required the owner of the site to purchase wetland credits.
Reed Contracting managed to complete this project on schedule and under budget. Sherman Hill, our site superintendent on this job, overcame a considerable amount of adversity due to the many complications posed by the tricky soil conditions. Sherman kept this project moving forward, and was an irreplaceable member of the Reed team at Pine Grove.
